U.S. Sues TikTok for Child Privacy Violation in 2024
A new conflict has emerged in the ongoing battle between TikTok and the U.S. government, this time focused on children’s online safety.
On Friday, the Value Office sued TikTok, accusing the platform of violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The lawsuit alleges that TikTok allowed children to create accounts and interact with adults, collecting and storing their data without parental consent. COPPA, enacted over two decades ago, requires social media platforms and websites to obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under 13. In compliance, most platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat prohibit users under 13 from creating accounts. TikTok, however, offers a view-only experience for children under 13.
