While some stars as Beyonce, Taylor Swift reached incredible heights, others found themselves caught up in controversies. This is 2024 Recap where we picked the top moments of the year that people couldn’t stop talking about.

Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar

The Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar “rivalry” in 2024 was two egos clashing and fans really liked eating it up. It was just a glorified pissing contest, with both artists trying to flex on each other. It was the kind of beef that gets people talking, clicks happening, and music streams skyrocketing. Fans constantly picking sides, dissecting every lyric, and creating a frenzy over which rapper is “winning” the beef. Kendrick had the upper hand in terms of artistry and deeper lyricism though also with least controversy compared to Drake.

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ and ‘Renaissance World Tour’

Beyoncé continued to captivate audiences in 2024 with the release of her album “Cowboy Carter” on March 29. The album showcased her versatility, blending country influences with her signature style. The Grammy Awards highlighted the album’s impact, noting that it “pushed boundaries once again, blending powerful messages of empowerment and social justice in ways that only she can.”

Following the album’s release, Beyoncé launched the “Renaissance World Tour,” which included a notable performance during the NFL Christmas halftime show on December 25. The event featured a surprise appearance by her daughter, Blue Ivy, and was streamed on Netflix. Beyoncé teased a major announcement for January 14, 2025, following the performance.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

More than 100 individuals, including dozens of children, have come forward claiming they were victims of rape, sexual assault, and exploitation by US rap star Sean “Diddy” Combs. Sean “Diddy” Combs is being held in federal custody with charges including racketeering and sex trafficking. The 2024 Summer Olympics, held in Paris, marked a grand return after the COVID-affected Tokyo 2020 Games. Taking place from July 26 to August 11, it featured 204 nations and 329 events. Paris, hosting for the third time, celebrated the centenary of the 1924 Games. The event gained extra excitement as it followed the pandemic-disrupted Olympics in Japan, amplifying anticipation and fan engagement. With sports held across multiple cities, including sailing in Marseille and surfing in Tahiti, Paris 2024 was a spectacular showcase of global athleticism.

Stunning Olympic  Opening Ceremony And Surrounding Controversy

The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics was an extraordinary and unprecedented event, marked by its vibrant celebration of French culture, inclusivity, and innovation. The ceremony took place on the River Seine, creating a stunning backdrop with the iconic landmarks of Paris. It was the first time in Olympic history that the opening procession took place on water, with 200 boats carrying athletes from 204 nations along the river. Though, the ceremony ignited a little controversy due to a performance that parodied Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” featuring drag queens. Intended to celebrate inclusivity and diversity, the scene was perceived by many as disrespectful to Christian traditions.

Olympic 2024’s Main Characters

The 2024 Paris Olympics showcased incredible performances from athletes like South Korean shooter Kim Ye-ji, who became a viral sensation with her unique glasses and world-record-breaking performance. Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikeç also caught attention, winning silver while competing casually, with one hand in his pocket and no shooting glasses. Simone Biles continued to dominate gymnastics, adding to her legendary status, while Armand “Mondo” Duplantis claimed pole vault gold with world record. Algerian athlete Imane Khelif  won gold in female boxing and became a topic of conversion to many like Donald Trump, Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling calling her a man and imposter in female athletics.

US Presidential Election and Trump’s Triumph

In the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, Donald Trump and JD Vance defeated Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Trump, who was president from 2017 to 2021, will take office again on January 20, 2025, alongside Vance as vice president. Joe Biden, facing concerns about his age and health, withdrew from the race in July, endorsing Harris as the Democratic nominee. Harris selected Tim Walz as her running mate.

Film

‘Oppenheimer’ : Best Picture Win

Christopher Nolan’s gripping historical drama “Oppenheimer” triumphed at the 2024 Academy Awards, winning Best Picture. The film, praised for its intense performances and thought-provoking narrative, explored the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the creation of the atomic bomb. ‘House of the Dragon’: Anticlimactic Finale

After building such a hype, the season finale of “House of the Dragon”  left many fans disappointed. The finale, which many had expected to deliver thrilling beginning of the war, felt anticlimactic, saying without giving any spoiler of course. Critics and fans alike expressed dissatisfaction with the pacing and screentime for some characters, sparking widespread discussions about the expectations surrounding high-budget fantasy series.

Many OpenAI’s top executive already left the company as Sam Altman focusing on business over AI safety according to many of them. Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton, 2024 novel prize winner in Physics, also harshly criticized Sam of ethical misconduct.

In another news, Google released Gemini 2.0, its most powerful AI model from Google DeepMind. It offers a range of capabilities, including text-to-speech with human-like audio, image generation with in-line visuals, a multimodal live API for real-time interactions, and virtual gaming companions that provide context-aware suggestions based on game actions.

Crime

Luigi Mangione, A New Cultural Phenomenon After Killing Health Insurance CEO.

United Healthcare CEO shot dead by 26-year-old Luigi Mangione. He was arrested on December 9, 2024, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and charged with first-degree murder in New York. He faces both state and federal charges, including using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking resulting in death. Mangione has pleaded not guilty, with his trial scheduled for February 21, 2025.
